Global mobile giant Samsung has officially unveiled the new successor of its Galaxy Tab S finally after innumerable speculations and leaked details. The new Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 tablet comes just a year’s time after its predecessor’s introduction and it will hit the market in August, 2015. The tablet lovers of the world would definitely like to know the new Tab S2’s capabilities over the Tab S. Let us find out, how the new Galaxy Tab S2 is different from the original Tab S.
The new Tab S2 is smaller, sleeker & lighter
The new Tab S2 will come in 2 sizes like its predecessor, but the same sizes won’t be there. The S2 will be offered in two screen size including the 9.7” and the 8” model, while the older S model is offered in the options of larger 10.5” & 8.4” versions. Samsung claims that the Galaxy Tab S2 is the thinnest in the market. So that’s good news for those who love sleek devices.
The Galaxy Tab S2 8 inch weighs 265gm and the 9.7 inch model weighs 389gm, both of which are lighter than the 294g weight of the 8.4 inch model of the Tab S. Thus, the new Tab S2 is more convenient when usability is concerned. The new tab also comes with a fingerprint scanner to add to its convenience.
The body color options are also different, as the Tab S2 will be offered in just standard black and white options, while the Tab S was available in little more attractive choices of Titanium Bronze and Dazzling White. While the new model comes with a smooth clean rear, the previous one offered a textured rear which was actually better. Thus, the design toned down a little from that of the Tab S2.
The Galaxy Tab S offered a sharper display
Both model sizes of the Galaxy Tab S2 offer a Super AMOLED display with a screen resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels, which slightly less than the Tab S, which had a resolution of 2560 x 1600.
The 8 inch Tab S2 has a pixel density of 320 ppi and the 9.7 inch model has a bit lower pixel density of 264 ppi which is lower than both the model of the slightly bigger Tab S that offered 359 ppi and 287 ppi pixel density respectively in its two models. This means that the Tab S’ display is definitely sharper than the new one.
However, the Tab S2 comes with a different aspect ratio ditching the usual 16:9 and the 16:10 which has been common with the Android devices. The new Galaxy Tab S2 has an aspect ratio 4:3 similar to the iPad and the likes’ resolution.
This results in a wider portrait display though the resolution has dropped. This makes it more convenient for reading texts similar to that of the ebooks. The down side of this aspect change is that watching movies in landscape there will be wider black bars on top and bottom than the previous model.
Same cameras on both, but no flash on the new model
With tablets, cameras have never been as important as the smartphones, but nevertheless they are always worth mentioning. The new Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 comes with an 8 MP auto-focus rear camera, while a 2.1 MP front shooter is also there. These are the same as the preceding model, Tab S. However, the Tab S comes with an LED flash for better low light pictures, which surprisingly is missing in the new model.
More memory, but less backup for the Galaxy Tab S2
The Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 gets a still unspecified Octa core processor with the combination of a quad core 1.9 GHz chip and a 1.3 GHz chip. This processor is powered by 3 GB of RAM. The Tab S comes with better storage options of 32 GB and 64 GB along with expandability of up to 128 GB via microSD card.
The Galaxy Tab S also comes powered by an octa-core processor with 1.9 GHz and 1.3 GHz chips along with 3 GB of RAM. However, the offered inbuilt memory is less at 16 GB, but it too comes with the flexibility to extend the storage to up to 128 GB.
Like many things, the new Tab S2 gets a lesser battery than the Tab S. The 8 inch Tab S2 will get a 4000 mAh battery pack and the 9.7 inch Tab S2 will get a 5870 mAh pack. The Tab S gets larger 4900 mAh and 7900 mAh battery packs respectively for its small and big models. So expect better backup on the older model.
The new Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 will obviously run on the latest 5.0 Lollipop Android version which will offer some added advantages. However, similar experience is expected from the new tab as that of the previous model, the Galaxy Tab S.
Samsung claims that the Tab S2 is most immersive tablet from the company and will offer fast and easy access to a range of features as well as superior viewing to the users. However, the same was claimed with the Tab S as well. Thus, much difference is not expected when user experience is concerned.
However, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 will offer preloaded Microsoft Office and offer OneDrive cloud storage subscription free for 2 years for better usability.
Although the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 is the new model, it cannot be actually termed as an upgraded model. Although it does come with the latest Android version and better storage, it does not really exceed the benefits of the good old Galaxy Tab S. Then again, there are many other things where the previous model is actually better including LED flash for the camera and bigger battery pack.
While the Tab S2 is slimmer and lighter than its predecessor, it comes with smaller screen size than the Galaxy Tab S and also has inferior screen resolution making the previous model a visually better device. The older Tab S has a slightly more attractive design as well.
So, there’s actually no big reason to spend money for the new updated Samsung Galaxy Tab S2.
