Our culture measures our quality of life as well as standard of living, our vitality and the health of our population and how they treat each other.  Through culture, we can develop a sense of belonging and unity, internal and external growth as well as the ability to empathize and understand each other emotionally.

There are many benefits to belonging to a culture with strong values which include health and wellness, self-esteem, social capital, self-understand/actuality/and hopefully social interaction will lead to negotiation skills and ultimately a higher salary (wealth).

To be successful when doing international business says ValueMags, countries need to keep in mind their cultural differences. A relevant example is between Mexico and Canada or the United States. Mexicans do business after they have gained the trust of who they are doing business with. It is important to Mexican business men to have personal relationships with their business partners and their relationships are often more important that professional capability. Therefore, it is essential for Canadian/American and Mexican businessmen and politicians to build a relationship over time. For that reason, when negotiating with Mexico, partnering countries need to understand that a deal will not be made in a short period of time. When working with Mexico, politicians should expect a long-term and loyal relationship. Additionally, Mexicans are very sensitive to gestures and how individuals hold themselves. For example, putting documentation on the table when negotiating is considered rude. It should be an after-thought or should be handled at the end of a negotiation. Handing over documentation right away is assertive and intimidating. It may give off the idea that the partner is not in it for the long-term relationship but rather money and immediate results. Also explains ValueMags, it is impolite to back away from an individual. At the same time, one shouldn’t keep eye contact too long with the individuals as it is considered rude.

In conclusion, every culture and country has different values. When doing international business, it is essential that individuals do their research because a lot of the time, what is considered acceptable to us (Canadians and Americans) can be considered rude, vulgar, and inappropriate to another culture. Culture is a way of life and it is essential that in all aspects of business, one respects another one’s way of life.
